I had GAS, A Photographer’s Story

I HAD GAS! A Photographer’s Story

GAS stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome in Photography. I am sorry to burst the bubble if you thought I would tell you a story about eating spicy food and its consequences. Two days ago, I had this sudden urge, i.e., an episode of GAS, that I needed a new camera. No logic in the world can stop you from acquiring new gear if GAS has kicked in… you can draw a parallel in your mind of GAS with a bad case of diarrhoea. You got to let it out!

Long story short, I decided to sell my existing camera and buy a brand new used camera with more megapixels. Why? I have no idea! I got a reasonable rate from one camera store, and as I was picking up my camera to take to the store to sell, I saw two lenses and another old camera lying next to it that I hadn’t used for five years. They were on the shelf, but I never noticed them, so I decided to sell them, too. After paying money and swapping two cameras and two lenses, I now own a brand new used camera. GAS released!

GAS usually brings happiness as you release it. It’s a temporary “relief” haha. What makes you a better photographer is using the outcome of GAS to its best and practising the art of photography.

If you ever see a fellow photographer having GAS, don’t waste time trying to convince them otherwise. If you happen to be the spouse/partner of that person suffering from GAS, help them see it through instead of telling them that they are fools.

My photography and filmmaking gear list is here if you want to have a look.

Quote of the Day: "Releasing GAS is like taking a deep breath after holding it in too long – it may sound a little funny, but boy, does it feel good to let it out and finally own that shiny new gear!"  ~ Says Every Photographer in the World
