Newlands Forest, Cape Town - Well Kept Secret
Newlands Forest offers a local experience in Cape Town, remaining a secret from tourists. This adds to its charm, especially if you're a holidaymaker or a tourist wishing to avoid long, strenuous hikes in the Cape Peninsula; a short walk or two will give you a memorable taste of Table Mountain, particularly during the rainy season or in hot summer weather. Every day at sunrise, locals flock to Newlands Forest for morning walks, jogging, and dog-walking, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere that feels distinctly local compared to more tourist-heavy spots like Camps Bay or Lion’s Head. The forest’s lush greenery becomes even more vibrant during winter when the streams flow with fresh water, creating a picturesque backdrop for strolls. The streams flow in other months, but rain is their primary water source. You will enjoy the walk regardless.
Where to Hike in Newlands Forest and have a small picnic or coffee?
The trails are accessible and not strenuous, making them ideal for families and casual hikers. There are multiple routes to explore. For the route, I suggest a spare 1 to 2 hours for a casual walk and fun with family.
For first-time visitors, it’s advisable to start from the parking area where the fire-fighting teams’ offices, residences, and helicopters are and walk 60 to 70 metres to reach the green map board identifying a path.

This is where you take either a right or left. At the green map board, I recommend turning left (if you are facing the mountain). After 100 metres, you will reach a bridge; instead of crossing it, turn right and continue following up the stream for as long as possible. Of course, stop to admire the forest and trees, say hello to friendly locals, dip your feet or enjoy a coffee break by the stream if you don't mind taking your shoes off. Following this route alongside the river is where you will enjoy the serene sounds of nature the most.

Along the way, you will reach the upper bridge, the intersection of many other short hiking and walking routes. You will frequently see dog walkers and joggers. You may also want to pause at the benches by the bridge, perfect for a small picnic or sipping coffee from a thermos. At this intersection, I keep going up and follow a boardwalk as well.

However, for a short fun detour, facing the mountain by this upper bridge, I often take a right turn and find myself amongst the tall pine trees that produce beautiful sounds when there is a gentle breeze. When you reach the pine trees, walk among them on your left towards the mountain and sit on a fallen tree log to find peace. You might also encounter a mushroom collector there. Be cautious about eating a mushroom or even tasting it if you’re unsure which ones are poisonous and which are not.
