Three Steps To Start Your Beginner Photography
Just a quick hello: I am Muji and so glad you stopped by! I am a passionate writer, photographer, and filmmaker living in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa.
If I were a beginner, I would keep it simple and only do the following three things, which I also focus on in depth in my Beginner Photography Course.
1 - The choice of Camera and Lens
I would only purchase a mirrorless camera that allows for interchangeable lenses. My preferred lens would be a 24-70mm lens. The 24mm focal length is sufficiently wide for capturing landscapes, while the 70mm range provides a decent zoom and reaches into telephoto territory.
A mirrorless camera, unlike a DSLR, doesn’t have a mirror which makes it lightweight and compact. Mirrorless cameras are what big companies like Sony, Cannon and Nikon invest in now.
2 - Which Camera Settings to Practice
I would enhance my skills by setting my camera to Aperture Priority Mode, indicated as A or Av on the camera dial. The aperture functions like the pupil of a human eye, expanding and constricting within your camera's lens. Using an aperture setting of f1.4, f2.8, or f4 will create a shallow depth of field, resulting in a beautifully blurred background ideal for capturing impressive portraits. In contrast, using an aperture value of f8, f9, or f11 will provide a great depth of field, making it suitable for landscape photography.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
3- Practice Composition in Photography
For my third priority, I would enhance my photography skills by focusing on composition techniques. This includes mastering concepts such as the rule of thirds, utilising leading lines, and effectively centering subjects, etc. Additionally, I would experiment with breaking these established guidelines to develop a unique style of composition that reflects my creative vision.
