The quest of finding your path as a photographer and a filmmaker
This week has been a whole of admin work, editing photos from my shoot in Frankfurt, working on my website, and attempting to generate more paid work for me.
Let’s start with a photo tip.
Remembering The Photography Rules
From a female model shoot I did in Frankfurt, Germany.
The shoot I did in Frankfurt wasn’t about directing the model on what to do; it was about remembering what I knew about composition, aperture, shutter, ISO, and my camera’s capabilities. I assumed she knew her job, and she assumed I knew mine. There was a relationship of trust.
In the photo above, I used everything I have shared with you through my newsletter and in-depth in my photography course for beginners.
A low angle as a perspective.
The Rule-of-thirds to place the model.
Leading lines of the staircase and the brick wall going into the subject.
The steps as a pattern.
Focus on the eyes, a moderately low ISO and a fast shutter speed at f1.4.
There is contrast, texture, shadows and highlights.
THE OX, THE RABBIT AND THE BOY
I follow Oxherd Boy's inspiring chats on Instagram—the boy and rabbit ride on the ox on a journey together.
The rabbit worriedly says, “I don’t know which way to go anymore.”
“Well”, the ox replies, “maybe this is where our real journey begins.”
“How do you know which path to take?”, the rabbit asks.
“Maybe there is no path,” replies the boy. “Maybe the path is simply made by walking.”
They meet a man on the way. The boy tells the rabbit what the man said, “He said he’s off to find himself, but what does that mean?”
The rabbit tilted her head and replied. “I don’t know.”
“No one can be found. We can only be created, and we create ourselves every day.”, says the ox.
I feel like the rabbit. I feel lost and unsure with so many of my ambitions not succeeding yet, and so many more to try in the coming days. But I reply to myself like the boy and the ox did above. It’s a sweet journey of discovering “who Muji is as a creator, what lies next in his journey and what should he do next?”.
Have you thought about your journey?
